Do you ever wonder who or what your plants are actually named after ? I do and sometimes I manage to find the time to look them up.
One such plant is my favourite rose William Lobb.
He was born in 1809 the son of a gardener, along with his brother he was encouraged to study botany. When he was older William and his brother were employed by Veitch Nurserys to go on plant hunts. He is responsible for the commercial introduction of the Araucaria araucana, the monkey puzzle tree, and the Sequoiadendron giganteum, the Wellingtonia. [ Information sourced from wikipedia.]
A very industrious man indeed.
But back to my rose. As you can see it has a huge amount of moss and is extremely thorny, it makes a large shrub and a huge impact as it is very fragrant. The colour changes as it ages fading to a very pleasing violet – grey.
This is just one of many old roses that grow in my garden, their season is generally short …..but what a season.

Such a lovely rose, I love roses that fade well, it makes their flowering seem longer. R. Rhapsody in Blue fades in the same way, is wonderfully scented and would repeat well if I gave it more water in summer.

Oh yes, I have it and it’s just come into flower this week. My daughter bought a rose this week called ‘Blue for You’, I think it’s another name for R in B, It looks so similar. Going out to water now !!!
