After all the problems I have had this summer with sawfly on the roses and me giving the roses a good talking to, I think it has worked. For some anyway.
I had really honestly had enough of trying to salvage some of the ailing plants, no sooner had they started to recover from one attack along came another. So some have been dug up and binned. But to my astonishment about half a dozen near the conservatory have started to give out some beautiful blooms. Maybe the sawfly season is over and the weather is holding up and allowing the plants to do what they have been trying to do all summer..
Ballerina.
Ballerina is now flowering for the first time this year, usually a very prolific bloomer, now although not many trusses it is very welcome all the same.
Buff Beauty.
This didn’t actually succumb to the dreaded sawfly but it was growing behind the granddaughters playhouse that we took down earlier in the summer. It had a prune and is now giving me some nice scented cutting material.
Young Lycidas.
And one of my favourite roses for it’s perfectly shaped flowers and exquisite perfume. This has quite a lot of strong growth and about ten or more flowers and buds. It’s going to get such a shock it the weather changes.
So a bit late in the day but for my Vase on Monday I have chosen Young Lycidas as my main flowers, along with Aster Alma Potschke and the stunning fading florets of Hydrangea Miranda looking more like a piece of faded old embroidery.

No surprise that almost all of us have used Asters today but you’ve used roses with them, very special and a lovely combination of colours. Enjoy your roses while you can.

It’s probably not something that I would get normally roses and asters together, but the good weather is giving us some unusual second and third flushes on so many different types of plants. I have even had delphiniums flowering again that are even bigger than the first lot. !!

I have never come across sawfly on roses but can imagine the devastation – I do hope it doesn’t prove to be a regular problem for you. How did you deal with them? How lovely to be surprised by these new flushes – I did look more than once at Young Lycidas when I was planning some extra roses last week. He is certainly a handsome young man and look great in the white vase – thanks for sharing it (and if you left a link on my blog more people would see yours too)

I have had sawfly for about 3 or 4 years now. But it seems to be getting worse. I am going to have to resort to desperate measures, something I was hoping to avoid. I think I am going to have to use Provado next year to try to break the cycle.

I hadn’t realised till last year that there were different sawfly for different species – on roses I would tolerate them even less than on our gooseberries!
I don’t know what the problem is with the link, but I will email and explain how I would do it.

Oh it is… I had a rose called ‘Lavender Pinnochio’ it was the most beautiful rose opening peachy and fading to lavender, but it was so weak always succumbed to what ever was going round…so it had to go….I only have a few old photos of it now.

Are all these lovely varieties you show preserved in heritage rose gardens in England? It would be too bad to have them disappear.
I think a Roses Collage of some sort would be great for your Solarium 🙂

You’re very kind.. but I don’t think any of my roses are rare or unusual. I could probably get Lavender Pinnochio again but I think it’s one of those plants that is geneticly weak and would be doomed anyway… There is always something in the catalogue to replace it, that’s the good part…. 🙂
